1 on 1 sessions

Working with me, we’ll take a novel approach.  I’ll assess you, try to understand your movements, your life, your temperaments, and we’ll create a strategy that fits you as a human being; rather than simply giving you a diagnosis that can be remedied by exercises from a textbook.

who is this for?

If you consistently run into the same problems then this is for you.  I commonly hear stories like “Every time I get motivated to work out I end up paying for it with aches and pains.”  This means there are underlying issues that need to be resolved.  But part of our process will be figuring out what exercises you CAN do, while addressing the things you can’t.

How is this different than Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is the epitome of a western medical, reductive approach to a deeply complex problem: Human Life.  We try to slap bandages on aches and pains, but they don’t address the root problems.

We all have compensations and asymmetries contributing to aches and pains, but if you haven’t dedicated your life to understanding how to correct them then how could you possibly know the right methods?  So we go to physical therapists.

Of course there are very good physical therapists, but unfortunately the system deeply limits their time, capabilities, and resources.  Working with me, we’ll take a novel approach.  I’ll assess you, try to understand your movements, your life, your temperaments, and we’ll create a strategy that fits you as a human being; rather than simply giving you a diagnosis that can be remedied by exercises from a textbook.

We have to identify problems, create strategies for solutions, make sure the strategies are implemented well, assess if the strategies are productive, and repeat the process.

Expectations

Each session will include a continually updated list of exercises as homework.  I have to state this up front - I’ll only work with people who are self motivated to do their homework.  If at any time we see that homework isn’t being done we’ll have an uncomfortable conversation; and if it persists I’ll gladly refund you for any sessions uncompleted. I can’t make you change, I’m only here to guide and facilitate change. The work that creates change is done by YOU! But don’t let this intimidate you, one of my main objectives as a coach is to simplify and consolidate.  Expect homework to take as little as 30 minutes a few days a week, and a couple daily tasks.

It’s helpful if you show up to each session “warm”, meaning a 5-10 minute bout of light exercise or stretching that gets your tissues warm, your breathing rate up, and anything specific that you know makes your body feel good! 60 minutes flies by, so doing the warm-up on your own time will help us be more efficient and effective in our session.
